NibbleCheck Terms of Use

Version 3 · last updated 3 October 2026

These are the terms that apply to NibbleCheck today, and they describe how the app actually works. A few things are not settled yet — a paid subscription, what community contribution milestones are worth, and the postal address we publish — and each of those is dealt with plainly in the section it belongs to rather than promised here. If we change these terms materially we will tell you in the app and ask you to accept the new version.

1. What NibbleCheck is — and is not

NibbleCheck is an information and decision-support tool. It helps you read and interpret the ingredient and allergen information on food labels, against the allergens you choose to track for the people in your care.

NibbleCheck does not:

THE PHYSICAL PRODUCT PACKAGING IS ALWAYS THE FINAL AUTHORITY. ALWAYS CHECK THE LABEL ON THE PRODUCT IN YOUR HAND BEFORE GIVING FOOD TO SOMEONE WITH AN ALLERGY.

For advice about managing an allergy, speak to a qualified healthcare professional. In an emergency, call 999.

NibbleCheck is not a medical device. It is not intended for any medical purpose. It reads the label information that is already on a product and hands it to you; every decision about what someone eats stays with you and the people advising you.

2. Why results can be wrong

Product data comes mainly from Open Food Facts (a crowdsourced database) and from community contributions. Recipes and packaging change, database entries can be incomplete, outdated or wrong, and on-device text recognition can make mistakes. That is why:

A result of any kind — including a green, high-confidence one — is information to support your own check of the packaging, not a decision made for you.

3. Who can use NibbleCheck

4. Your responsibilities

5. Nurseries and childcare settings

NibbleCheck is for families and individuals only. There are no nursery or childcare accounts, and you cannot share a child's profile with a nursery or school through the app. Please do not sign up expecting to run a setting on it.

You can of course print or show a child's allergy card to a nursery or school. That is a summary you are handing over yourself, not a service we provide to the setting. A setting's own legal duties around allergen management — including Natasha's Law and Food Standards Agency guidance — stay with the setting, and nothing in NibbleCheck reduces or discharges them. Staff must always check the physical packaging.

6. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under UK law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, and including your non-excludable rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Subject to that:

7. Your content and data

Your personal data is handled in line with our Privacy Policy.

Product data that comes from Open Food Facts is published under the Open Database License (ODbL). We publish the Open-Food-Facts-derived portion of our catalogue under that same licence at nibblecheck.com/data.

By submitting a community contribution — a verification or a label photo — you give us permission to use it in the shared product catalogue that every NibbleCheck user reads. Your own contributions are not included in the ODbL extract linked above. We may in future share verification data back to Open Food Facts; we do not do that today, and we will update this section before we start.

8. Subscriptions and payments

NibbleCheck is free, and there are no payments in the app. Nothing can be bought, no price is charged, and no card details are ever entered or held.

NibbleCheck does not currently put limits on any feature — for example, there is no daily cap on barcode scans. If we introduce limits on convenience features, we will update these terms and tell you in the app first. The allergy check itself is never capped: you can always type a product's ingredients in by hand and get a full result.

We expect to add a paid subscription later. If we do, we will publish the payment terms — price, renewal, cancellation and refunds — and you will have to accept them before anything can be charged. Until then, this section makes no promise about what a subscription would cost or include.

NibbleCheck does not currently offer any paid features or a paid version (such as “NibbleCheck Pro”). If that changes, we will update these terms and tell you in the app, and you will have to accept the payment terms before anything can be charged.

The app shows progress toward community-contribution milestones. A milestone is a count of your verified contributions and nothing more. Milestones are not currently worth anything, and we have not set the terms on which they might be.

9. Service changes, suspension and termination

We may change or withdraw features, and may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms or abuse the community catalogue. You can delete your account at any time in Settings; what deletion does is described in the Privacy Policy.

10. General

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in the courts where you live.

NibbleCheck is operated by Oliver Kirkman (sole trader, trading as NibbleCheck), United Kingdom.

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stands. We will notify you of material changes in-app, and acceptance of these terms (and the Privacy Policy) is recorded at sign-up with a versioned, timestamped consent record.
